Do you check the 5G coverage in the area when searching for a new home? Would a poor mobile signal at the address influence your decision to move there?
As we rely more and more on our mobile phones, a strong mobile internet network is increasingly important for day-to-day life. Here’s how to check 5G coverage of an area before you arrive, so you can make sure you can get online - and stay online - when it matters.
Why should you check 5G coverage when house hunting?
Choosing a property just because it has great 5G might be taking things too far, but there are several reasons to check mobile coverage when house hunting.
A strong mobile signal and 5G network can be essential for calling emergency services and gathering emergencies when things go wrong
If your home broadband goes down or takes a while to be installed, a good 5G signal keeps you online
Many properties have limited access to traditional broadband networks, in which case, mobile broadband becomes an essential alternative
Not all 5G networks are created equal - running a thorough check means you can see not just network availability but also average speeds in the area
How to check 5G coverage at your new home
Every UK mobile provider uses one of three carrier networks to host their connections. That means there are three networks you’ll need to check to get the full picture of coverage at your new home.
EE
You can check the local availability of the EE mobile network by entering your postcode here. The checker shows 4G and 5G availability, and ranks the quality of the connection (e.g. good, great or excellent) both indoors and out.
O2
O2’s mobile network checker shows the indoor and outdoor availability of 4G and 5G networks, as well as if your area is covered by a 5GSA or ‘5G+’ network. It’s handy for seeing which properties have the highest available speeds, and will get the best performance from mobile broadband or 5G-dependent smart home devices.
Vodafone & Three
Since the two networks merged, Vodafone customers can now use the Three network, and vice versa. However, the company still operates two availability checkers that show slightly different coverage as the merger is still ongoing.
Vodafone’s checker shows the availability of 4G, 5G and 5G ultra (Vodafone’s term for 5GSA networks) and ranks them as either good, good outdoors, limited or no coverage.
Meanwhile, Three’s checker shows the availability of 4G and 5G networks both indoors and outdoors in your area and shows the strength of the signal in terms of signal bars, from one bar for limited coverage up to three bars for excellent availability.
Or, let us do the legwork
If that seems like a lot of options to compare, don’t panic. We’ve combined every option into one with our comprehensive mobile broadband checks. With just a few address details, we can find the best mobile network available in your area, and check if it’s fast enough to support 4G or 5G mobile broadband.
Even better, because our mobile broadband is multi-network, you can stay connected to the best available network in your area, even if that changes.
