Looking for the best mobile broadband? Here are 5 Essential features to look for

Dec 15, 2025

UK providers don’t make it easy to tell who has the best mobile broadband offer for you.

With plans available across different networks, different hardware, different data allowances and at different prices, you can’t always do a like-for-like comparison.

However, there are some key features you should look for in your plan to find the best mobile broadband for your home.

Unlimited mobile broadband plans

While unlimited data plans are becoming more common, many providers still offer mobile broadband packages with a capped data allowance.

Many of these data allowances are so low that they restrict typical daily use. Even if a plan’s data allowance matches your current usage, there’s a good chance in the long term it won’t. Home broadband data consumption has increased 20 times in a decade as changes to both our lifestyles and the nature of the internet have driven increased download needs.

Exceeding your data limit comes with hefty extra fees, so it’s a better option to find a great value plan that also offers unlimited data.

Multi-network connectivity

The best mobile broadband plan is one that offers a great connection speed wherever you go. However, major mobile broadband providers like Vodafone, O2 and EE limit their customers to a single network - their own.

The problem is that even major metropolises like London have some areas where certain networks have low or no availability, and the problem can be even worse in more remote and rural areas.

For increased flexibility and a guarantee you’ll be able to use the best network in your area, even if that changes, look for a provider that offers multi-network connectivity.

Great customer support

In an ideal world, you’ll never have to reach out to your provider’s customer support team. However, in reality, a customer makes a complaint about their telecom provider's service every 3 and a half minutes.

Look for a provider with a great customer service rating. Other green flags include a dedicated customer support team, rather than outsourcing their support, which will make it quicker and simpler to get any issues resolved.

No mid-contract price rises

According to UK telecoms regulator Ofcom, providers should let you know at the start of your contract if your price will rise while under contract (and most major providers do increase your monthly price year-on-year, even while under contract).

However, even more concerning is the fact that Sky recently raised prices for existing customers beyond what they had been warned to expect, taking advantage of a loophole in Ofcom’s regulations.

With other providers expected to follow suit now that the precedent has been set, the safer option is to find a plan with a guarantee of no mid-contract price rises - ever.

Top-end hardware

The best mobile broadband isn’t just about being on the best network; it also means using a powerful and reliable mobile broadband router.

Older hardware won’t benefit from recent improvements to 5G technology, or be able to take advantage of the most up-to-date WiFi protocols, so look for a provider who uses more recent model routers for a better quality connection.
