The question of how many UK mobile networks there are is a surprisingly complicated one - depending on how you measure, the answer could be three, four or dozens.
The UK now has three MNOs - Mobile Network Operators. These networks own the masts and infrastructure responsible for carrying all of the UK’s mobile data and signals. The three carrier companies are VodafoneThree, EE and Virgin Media O2.
Until recently there were four. Vodafone and Three completed their merger on 31 May 2025, creating VodafoneThree, and Vodafone took full ownership of the combined business in July 2026. The two networks have since been technically integrated, so they now operate as a single network.
Outside of the ‘carrier’ MNOs there are many smaller mobile companies that offer mobile data, calls and messaging packages direct to customers. However, these companies do not own and operate their own network infrastructure. Instead they are MVNOs, relying on a larger carrier network to actually broadcast and receive signals.
What’s an MVNO?
MVNO stands for Mobile Virtual Network Operator. Instead of owning and operating mobile masts and network infrastructure, these companies lease capacity on the mobile network from an MNO and then resell it to consumers.
Whichever mobile company you have a contract with in the UK, your calls, messages and data will be carried by one of the three MNOs.

The UK’s largest mobile network, formed by the merger of Vodafone UK and Three UK. Customers who joined either network before the merger are now automatically connected to whichever of the two networks offers the best coverage where they are, and the business has committed to investing £11 billion in its network over the next decade.

The O2 mobile network is run by Virgin Media O2, a 50:50 joint venture between Liberty Global and Telefónica that brought Virgin Media and O2 together in 2021.
